I love graffiti.. I've never been a huge fan of tags, the quick throw up with some unreadable name, but I have always loved the piece work. The best part about graffiti is the random places beautiful art shows up at. I appreciate the energy that goes into scaling a fence, climbing up a fire escape, hanging over a freeway bridge, and then dropping a masterpiece that may or may not last. I actually appreciate this art form more than most of fine art I see. So now that I have put all that on the table, I think a good percentage of graffiti artist work looks very similar to one another's. This is in no way saying that the art isn't amazing, but if you are reading a book about graffiti and you flip threw a thousand pictures with funny letters that all have flares and drips and light burst, then it all starts to look the same. I like the pictures that jump out of the stack. The only way this gets done is by being original and different. When it comes to street art, Invader switch the game up. Instead of using the conventional medium of aerosol cans, he reached into a new bag of tricks using mosaic tiles. The brilliant part is the subject matter. The 8bit world of old school video games lends itself perfectly to pixilated pictures. The design in and of it's self is simplicity, however the subject matter pierces the hearts of all 80's babies that had Ataris and Nintendos. I think that is why I love it so much... 64
