Beat's Rhymes & Life
I was reading Complex's list of 25 best Hip Hop documentaries and I re-discovered a gem that I touched a while back. It was, of course, the "Beats, Rhymes & Life" doc directed by Michael Rapaport. I use to be a huge hip hop snob and would only listen to the purist lyrics, but that gets tiresome. Any which way, I just watched this Doc and I got that contagious Hip-Hop virus flowing threw my veins again! I love pure Hip-hop and when I see clips of the product being made, I want to spend hours on Cool-edit-Pro looping drums and inserting obscure samples into tracks on top of tracks. This Doc was truly a gem, shining a light on the ups and downs of one of the Genre's great contributors...
I forgot, that when they first came out, they were dressed on some super next to left shit. They had African Dishakis (had to google that word), plus an ensemble of super loud and colorful native inspired dress. The documentary said they were down with Zulu Nation, so they got a pass on the questionable linens. It goes to show the music is what matters.
The Doc also touched on the making of the first couple of albums. With "Midnight Marauders" they took pictures of bunch of artists head shots with Head Phones and zipped them together to make a background.
